A Candian friend of mine once said this is because Canadians are always walking on egg shells. They have seen what happens when you pi$$ off the United States. He was joking, but they say the best humor is rooted in truth.

I don’t really care for Atwood myself, but Candians, that interests me. You’d be a little leery of the mamoth sitting next to you if you knew that they knew that you were the only ones to burn their capital to the ground. Now, I’m married with 2 daughters, so “eggshells”…?? Yeah, that’s likely good.

Its amazing how persistant that old myth is.
Washington was not burnt to the ground. There was selective burning of US government buildings in response to US attacks on Toronto and various border villages. Also strictly speaking it was a British force that did it so we can claim the honour.
The only real problem was that some stupid idiots rebuilt the place!

still I can’t understand the fuss, in the last 200 years, the europeans have been burning each others capitals repeatedly and we all get along nicely cough 
Yeah from about 1000 AD to 1950’s burning capitals was just a part of foreign policy. Now the world gets crapped off with countries’ that do it. Guess they missed the imperialism bus
