Riddle Encounter

Hello all,

I have a riddle that goes like this:

Silmaril maker cutter.

Answer is not Feanor.

Any guesses? I was totally flaberghasted when that was not the answer.

Deni

Hello all,

I have a riddle that goes like this:

Silmaril maker cutter.

Answer is not Feanor.

Any guesses? I was totally flaberghasted when that was not the answer.

Deni

-Might it be Ancaruin, Feanor's sword (or cutter)?
-Feanor was slain by balrogs (gothmog, specifically)

So I would probably guess one of the two

Just a couple of ideas.

Hello all,

I have a riddle that goes like this:

Silmaril maker cutter.

Perhaps it's Gothmog who is the cutter of Feanor, the maker of the Silmaril

Answer is not Feanor.

Any guesses? I was totally flaberghasted when that was not the answer.

Deni, I believe the answer to Silmaril Cutter Maker Will be Telchar.
He was the Dwarf who forged the blade that cut the silmaril from the
crown. I will be trying it this turn as I have the same riddle. I
will let you know how it turns out.

why ? the silarmil maker was feanor. And you could say
that feanor was the one who cut the silmaril into
shape. But IMO by repeating 'maker' and 'cutter' imply
that both words do not mean the same thing. If only
one word was used, then I would go with feanor, but
not when both are used.

This was discussed earlier. One view was that it was
the person who killed (or cut) feanor (which I think
we said was gothmog), but we didn't think so (and I'm
not sure what words were already tried).

I reckon this is a much better answer. Silmaril maker
is feanor. So the question then becomes what does
'cutter' mean, and how does it fit in with feanor.

And is the riddle 'silmaril cutter maker' - which
would be the person who made the item that cut the
silmaril.

Or 'silmaril maker cutter ? As this could be read as
'what is the name of the sword that feanor used ?'

just confusing people even more
din

Did Gothmog use a Sword to cut down the Silmaril Maker? Perhaps the
name of this weapon is the cutter of the the Silmaril Maker?

Or is it the name of Feanor's sword (i.e. his cutter?)

The riddle is Silmaril Cutter maker. I believe that The Silmarillion
states that Feanor created the Silmarils from the Trees of Light, but
it never said that he "cut" them. I think everyone assumes that they
were cut, as I originally did before rechecking the Silmarillion, as
gems have been for many years, but I don't think it ever syas that
they were cut in their creation anywhere. I think it says he "formed
them". However one of them was cut from a crown and the blade that
cut it from the crown was forged by the Dwarf Telchar. I just hope
they don't want the dwarven name for him! I should find out
tomorrow and will post the result.

I consider this riddle 'mostly' solved  and I am willing to bet it
is.....Ancaruin. Still, great research Robert!
