just waiting in the group for a reply to my palantir question, and I
saw this.
I don't think its doriath. Ok I can understand that people are
thinking that its doriath due to
1) Doriath is also called land of the fence due to the magical
defenses that melian put up, and
2) the dwarves got a little bit passionate when they made the
Nauglamir in doriath and they slew the elven king. The elves didn't
take they well, and killed most of the dwarves who made the things,
and from here
3) the dwarven sent in an army and sacked the place.
Maybe ...
two only passed ? We are talking Beren for one. Maybe the wolf
Carcharoth was the second.
RD: Surely Luthien was the second, when she escaped from her prison and went after Beren. But no, Beleg led the elves in attacks -from- Doriath so that's a lot more than two! Perhaps by 'only two' it means only two mortal men (as opposed to elves) Beleg and Beren?
but …
elf fought elf to die that day ??? No elves fought elves at the fall
of Doriath (that I remember).
RD: Dior, king of Doriath (after its sack by the dwarves) was slain by the sons of Feanor but not before he slew three of them first. But that wasn't the same day - unless that's just a poetic expression.
Another option may be Gondolin ?
1) protected by a wall / fence (several of them I think)
2) the two were the humans Hurin and Huor who came and went.
3) elf fought elf when it fell.
The main problem with gondolin is that I don't know what dwarves had
to do with it. We have a dark elf being involved. It doesn't say that
the dwarven passion was active when it fell, only that dwarven
passion took place there, so maybe it was before it fell ?
another aspect on the last line ... did the elves fight each other
(and the loser died), or did the elves have a contest with each
other, and the loser got to die ? (ie the elves didn't kill each
other, but they had to decide who would)
thanks
din
RD: I don't think it's Gondolin, which was built in a hidden valley surrounded by the mountains of Echoriath. Whilst you could stretch a point and call the encircling mountains (poetically) a 'fence' there was as you say, no dwarven involvement at any point. For me, that rules it out. I think Doriath is more likely.
