Can anyone help me with the following riddle. I tried 'Avari' as the
answer and would try 'Teleri' next turn. I just don't know if I'm on
the right track and would appreciate help with this one:
The west of the middle,
where dwelt the grey
who so in love did heed the ancient call little
til swallowed by that held at bay.
I think you need to look for a geographic term, not an ethnic one --
"_where_ dwelt the grey"

This is Beleriand (I think). It was the west-most part
of Middle Earth (line one) and it was the home of the
SIndar or "grey" elves (line 2). The Sindar were a
spit faction of the teleri. They originally traveled
west to Valinor, but stopped (and thus never saw
trees, therfore grey elves) when their leader, Elwe
(aka Elu Thingol) fell in love with Melain and decided
to settle down (lne 3). It sank beneath the sea with
the fall of Thangorodrim at the end of the first age
(line 4).
It could also be Doriath (read 'mantle of') the
Kingdom of Elwe in Beleriand.

Wasn't Gollum a "Hobbit", a "Murderer", and a Hobbit Murderer?
I think he was known as Smeagol then.

So the answer must be a place, not Teleri. Doriath is
the answer? That must be close.
I have a riddle that I need help with... two words.
Hobbit
Murderer
And "smeagol" was not the answer. Anyone have any
guesses? Sharky maybe?
thanks in advance,
Nick
RD: Pretty sure it's "Gollum". Strictly speaking of course, you are right and GSI is wrong, because Smeagol was his name at the time of the murder. He only became known as Gollum later, after his banishment.
Richard.

The old policy at GSI was if you WERE right, but they just tossed in a
default name, you could write them and they would correct it...
I.E. the riddle that can be answered Sun is supposed to ALSO be answered in
Elvish for Sun. Blech.
