i looked at the encyclopedia of arda and gandalfs' other aliases listed as
Incanus- northern area third age name. Prob not appropriate
Mithrandir- grey wanderer the elves. Not appropriate
Olorin- seems to be a 'true' name.
Tharkun- name given to gandalf by dwarves. Probably it. Gordon pointed me in this direction and it seems to fit.
titles as; the grey, grey pilgrim, grey wanderer, stormcrow, the white.

Hi,
many thanks to you and Adrian for getting back to me. I like the
idea of the Dwarven name given Gandalf's role in the
hobbit. 'Little' host could refer to the size of the members rather
than the number in the group. I'll have a scout through the hobbit
tonight.
I'll either go for that or Mithrandir and let people know what I
come up with.
Cheers,
Chris
Might be another little host other than the hobbits.
I think the dwarves call him something like Tharkun. Don't recall
exactly.
Was Tom Bombadil small, I've always thought of him as little, and
have a feeling he referred to Gandalf as his original name, Olorin.
I agree it looks like Gandalf.Gordon
