RD: The eye (ie Sauron) didn't close till the end of the Third Age, so the
'age of deed and tale' looks like Third. But the riddle contains a second
question, 'How many was it now that it's done.' That could be Three or
possible Four, as Sauron's fall marked the end of the Third Age and the
start of the Fourth. Frankly this riddle is is badly written, containing as
it does two questions. In order of preference I would try
1) Third
2) Three
3) Four
AS far as i can see the eye thing refers to sauron and he first died or what
ever at the end of the third age. so with the last phrase "How many was it
now that it's done" i would say that the answer could be: Three or the
number of years in the thirds age.

Could it also mean the number of years since then, or
maybe the years in the 3rd age? "Long was it before
the eye did close and we saw the sun. How many was it
now that it's done."
I think RD is right it is either "third" or "fourth,"
also because it seems to want a one (i.e. third) or
two (i.e. third age?) word answer, but thought I'd
raise it.

RD: The eye (ie Sauron) didn't close till the end of
the Third Age, so the

question, 'How many was it now that it's done.'

It was an age of deed and tale of little joy and much
travail. Long was it before the eye did close and we
saw the sun.
How many was it now that it's done.
"the eye did close". I think we should all agree thatt
the eye is a reference to sauron. And he was defeated
at the end of the third age.
All the ages mentioned in M/E had great deeds and
tales of little joy. So that's no help.
But the question that is asked is the last line 'how
many was it now that it's done".
I agree that this is badly written, but I think it
means 'How many years were there in the third age
before Saruon was defeated ?"
That should be obtained by looking up the book. And
even then I think we don't calculate the end of third
age as the fall of sauron, but instead at the passing
of the last elven rings over the sea.
It could also mean "How many ages have passed since
the fall of sauron". We need to remember that Tolkien
imagined M/E to be our earth. I seem to remember
reading somewhere that Tolkien did imagine what age we
are currently in. I think it was 9, but I wouldn't bet
my house on it.
If this is the correct meaning of the last line, then
"its how many ages have past since the third". And
that won't be in the LoTR book (actually I forget
where I read it - maybe the letter of Tolkien ???).
actually if it is how many ages have passed since the
fall of sauron, its a tough riddle. That's a bit of
obscure middle earth knowledge that only the hard-core
would know (as it won't be in LoRT or any of the ICE
modules).
So I would go with how many years were in the third
age. And that's not 3,4, or a small number like that.
thanks

Folks, wasn't this in a FA1K game? then the answer could be 1000. !000
years have passed at the time of the game since Sauron fell and the One Ring
was destroyed.
Just my two cents.

Just my two cents.
Draugnar
RD: Sauron fell on March 25, year 3019 of the Third Age. The Third Age
ended on Oct 6 3021 (LoR appendix B). So if the question means 'how many
years since the Eye closed' the answer is 3.
If as Draugnar suggests, the riddle is specific to 4th Age, the answer is
1003. But I don't think this can be right, because the 4th Age games start
c (circa=about) 1000, not exactly 1000, so an exact count of years is
impossible.
Also, there is no mention of 'years' in the riddle. The riddle says: 'It
was an age... bla bla bla... How many was it now that it's done' which if
grammatically correct, means how many ages. In which case the answer is,
once again, 3.
Richard.

Sauron feel in the Third Age & it's now the Fourth Age so 'how many (Ages) was it now that it's done" could be 1.
