Legolas was definitely a tree lover and gull listener; but I can’t remember anything about Legolas sailing away with a friend.

Yup! 
Legolas says something about hearing the gulls when they sailed up the river to Minas Tirith, something along the lines of “now that I have heard their cries never again will I have peace in MiddleEarth.”
