In a forest lived he
as hearty as the proverbial tree.
During the struggle he helped as he could
but, in the end, he did as he would.
My old GSI data indicates Tom Bombadil and Treebeard are not the answer.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Radagast…? Beorn?
The answer certainly sounds like Radagast to me, who Tolkien referred to as being far more interested in beasts and birds than the affairs of Men. His contibution against the Dark Lord seemed to be as an information gatherer.
In regards to Treebeard: Could the answer perhaps be Fangorn, his true name?
If pressed though I’d go with radagast.
Greg
Radagast was not correct though it made perfect sense to me.
Could it be Ghan-buri-Ghan
Chapter 5/Return of the King
"No,father of horsemen we fight not . Hunt only. Kill gorgun in woods ,hate orc-folk. You hate gorgun too.We help as we can.

Could also be Treebeard? He was instructed to hang on to Sauruman in Orthanc but let him go as it wasn’t in his nature to keep things caged. :o

Id have thought Beorn
Ghan-buri-ghan was not the answer
