We've got permission to use appropriate quotes from "the Lord of the Rings"
and "the Hobbit". Around 3 or 4 paragraphs in length, giving a reference
(book and chapter). Feel free to send in your favourite quotes and we can
  add them into the rulebook.

Note NOT the other books only LotR and tH.

  Thanks

  Clint
From "The Hobbit" Unwin paperback chapter 18 The Reurn Journey pp271-272 (the finale to the Battle of Five Armies):

In that last hour Beorn himself had appeared - no one knew how or from where. He came alone, and in bear's shape; and he seemed to have grown almost to giant-size in his wrath.
The roar of his voice was like drums and guns; and he tossed wolves and goblins from his path like straws and feathers. He fell upon their rear, and broke like a clap of thunder through the ring. The dwarves were making a stand still about their lords upon a low rounded hill. Then Beorn stooped and lifted Thorin, who had fallen pierced with spears, and bore him out of the fray.
Swiftly he returned and his wrath was redoubled, so that nothing could withstand him, and no weapon seemed to bite upon him. He scattered the bodyguard, and pulled down Bolg himself and crushed him. Then dismay fell on the goblins and they fled in all directions.

I like this excerpt particularly because it shows how badly WRONG GSI got the relative strengths of Beorn and Bolg - something I partially addressed in my WotR scenario!

RD: I'll look out for it. My favourite author after Tolkien has to be Katherine Kerr: aTime of Omens, a Time of War etc. She captures Celtic/medieval flavour brilliantly and even more importantly, she understands how magic is supposed to work.

While waiting impatiently for the last book in Kerr's series, I'm currently reading one of Raymond Feist's Riftwar books. The Kingdom people are the Yanks, the Tsurani are the Japs and the Elves are the Injuns. But don't let that put you off; the combat scenes are excellent!

My recommendation of good fantasy whilst we're here: George RR Martins series of books, or Juliet Mckenna's books (5th one now out - haven't read it yet but I hope it doesn't "do a Jordan"). Robin Hobbs' Assassin series, if you like her style, is excellent as well. The Liveship series after that is not quite as good but worth it if you can get past the 100 or so pages. The list goes on...
