Anyone ever heard of a Free character surviving an encounter with Sauron? Is it a technical impossibility to defeat him, given that it would end the game?

Never heard of a Free Character having an encounter with Sauron. Army yes, including Army Commander. All poof bye bye in my experience…including a neutral Corsairs once who lost his entire naval armada about to invade Gondor…seemed Sauron didn’t care much for him. You’d have thought the guy would’ve joined the Free after something like that, eh? But noo… Poetic justice, the dolt bankrupted himself (as the Corsiars…?) with 4500 HC at Pelargir…cheers.
Never had a character encounter with him. Army encounters, yes. The army commander does not always die-- as long as you have something like 60,000 in defense. I’ve seen someone survive it, though it was years ago.
Oh Gilders, old boy…id love to think that Elrond or someone equivalent ran into our lord and master...that would be quite funny. Bad news is, you are probably toast. The good news is that when Sauron meets a DS character he often boosts him quite a lot. As FK once i had Uthmag meet him in an army with Ren. Ren got rank boosts and Uthmag got Mage boost AND a lost spell. Very handy! If you give me the hex location ill run along and meet him…

I have seen Sauron give ranks to all abillities and also a lost spell to the ones with magerank, only thing is, they all need to be in the army.
Just imagine a ClL player seeing Sauron on one if his pop’s (he stays two turns, so its much more effective if you spot him, and can reach him with an army), and movjoins all of his agents into the army, and marches of to meet their master 
Think the ranks I have experienced Sauron giving, has been between 10 to 20 ranks
Sauron can be killed in personal combat. Seen it. Done it. Blah-Blah. In a 2950 game. I have the notes somewhere.
He is introduced in the PC report as a “Dark Maiar Spirit”, but his picture is the same one you get for Gollum (which is a picture of a dragon).
It’s just like dragon-slaying. You load enough artys on Galadriel or someone equally buff, and you can take him down. Nothing but a challenge boost for a reward. And bragging rights. The game continues.
Can we conclude, oh great liquorious one, that 2950 and 1650 are thusly different in this respect then?

Never played a 1650. I assume he is an army encounter only (just like 2950). However, you can challenge anyone if you are in the same hex. Encounter or no.
In a 1650 game he shows up in the pop center report as Sauron.
My commander/mage leading the army got 25 to mage rank and a lost list spell. Too bad the encounter was on the last turn of the game I was playing or I coulda tried to get everyone over to him again.

As you can see from Goldschlager’s report, my thinking was more along the lines of loading Saruman with our best mage artifacts and bringing your lord and master to his Maiar knees. I just didn’t know if it was possible.
I won’t divulge Sauron’s location to you. Nor any of my other juicy secrets for that matter.
Just take heed of the implied message: we won’t be satisfied killing Celedhring (traitor scum), Urzahil, the Nine, and those bumbling, butter-knife wielding Cloud Lord agents. We want to bring Sauron down too.

You can issue personal challenge to anyone regardless of location to check and see if they are alive, you have their ID correct, to generate a nation message, etc.
Personally been a 2950 game in which Galadriel PC’ed out 2 dragons.
Have a good friend that stole Gandalf’s ring with an agent around 50
All this was when GSI ran things, if that matters.

Krazy K survived to victory on turn 26. After being cursed to near death on what seemed like 3 different occasions -and- having Dol Guldur seiged for what seemed like 4 different occasions. lol.
All those scary moments added up to a good game.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I lost that game! But fun it most definitely was…
What challenge rank is Sauron?
I know he has Command 100 and Mage 100, does he carry an Artifacts worth releaving him of, well if the DS can do it to Galadriel and Gandalf !!!
