This situation seems to be getting more frequent to the point that it
is no longer occasional. I see the point of those not yet playing who
are reading posts to determine if they want to play not wanting to be
excluded. If it gets more frequent then I'd say something needed to
be done, but it is something we can work around now as long as no one
responds to the twins or whatever.
Ok you computer gurus out there. I have a porno screen that pops up
sometimes as soon as I click on internet explorer. I have been told
that someone from here my home, must have let a cookie be sent that
allows this. Of course everyone here denies doing this, my question
though is how do I find this cookie and get rid of it so that this
stops? I have Microsoft Windows 98 as my operating system. This pop
up takes up my entire screen and cannot be moved to where it can be
minimized or closed. My only option is to Ctrl Alt Delete or to shut
power off to my computer which I do not want to keep doing if I can
make this thing go away.
First, clear your cookies (open Internet Explorer,
then do so under Tools). That does mean the next to
time you go to sites you do want to recognize you
(Yahoo, for instance), you'll need to sign in, but
it's worthwhile.
Second, check your startup programs. Go to Start and
Run and type "msconfig.exe". The last tab, Startup,
will tell you what your computer launches on start.
Uncheck boxes for things you know you don't need
launched (some programs, like RealPlayer and
QuickTime, will automatically tell themselves to
launch on startup, without your permission).
If you don't know what a given program is or if it
needs to be there on startup, check the Task List at www.answersthatwork.com.
Finally, get a spyware catcher, like AdAware (free, at
the above site) and run it.
Good luck!
Dan

I would take Dan's last suggestion first and go ahead and get a spyware
catcher program. In fact, everyone should do this. I discovered 107 pieces
of "spyware" on my computer with Spybot: Search and Destroy. After letting
the program "fix" the spyware, I enjoyed a small (but big enough to be
noticed) increase in my internet speed.
AOL users can download either AdAware or Spybot by simply going to keyword:
Spyware. I personally prefer Spybot. As far as I understand it, AdAware
simply removes spyware . . . thus, it will eventually come back via internet
surfing. Spybot, however, somehow "disables" the spyware to where it no
longer functions even though it's still on your harddrive. Thus, in the
future when spyware programs try to install themselves on your computer,
they will "see" their disabled versions and think they're already installed.
At least, that's what I was told. I'm not a "guru" or anything. Either way,
you can't go wrong getting all that spy-junk off your computer.

Spybot is a good utility. But people who do
file-sharing with popular programs like Kazaa should
know that they come bundled with spyware and won't run
without them.
If you don't use such programs, no worries. If you do,
either have Spybot leave in place the relevant
programs (Gator, in the case of Kazaa), or use the
less-agressive AdAware.
At the very least, anyone using Spybot should follow
the instructions and log the files marked for
quarantine.
Cheers,

Others have given some suggestions on fixing this, so I won't go into
that, but I do have one piece of advice for closing the window,
instead of rebooting: trying typing ALT-F4. Good luck.

For anyone who wants to know more about this, I strongly recommend going to www.grc.com. The author has produced lots of applications to check the security of your PC and has some very interesting articles.
