Spider encounter

Having recently encountered a giant spider and left the program to
select the default "flee" response, the character in question died
horribly!? I was hoping to be left with one health.....
Can someone please confirm that the "flee" response is the right
answer (and that I was just unlikey); hopefully I'll be ok next time
round: another character in the same game has the same encounter at a
different location. Doh!

Were you at full health to begin with? Monster encounters typically do 99
points of damage. You can get the same bad result with dragon encounters,
etc.

If you were, I have no idea, except that maybe it saw Spiderman and was on
some 'species'ial-pride kick.

Remember... sometimes You Squish the Spider, sometimes the Spider Squishes
You~

The game is not black and white, never has been, hopefully
never will be. The "right" answer is the right answer because
it works "most" of the time. Not all.

RD: I have had a character killed by a spider despite having 100% health. I remember distinctly because it was Beawyn and she had a very useful Locate artifact spell!

If you want to avoid spiders, you basically have 2 choices:
  1) Don't move characters into Mirkwood (I've even had a spider encounter in the elven forests in the far north-west too!) or
  2) Put characters in those areas into armies.

This is something else which should be put right in the potential 2nd ed rules: if a character has been sitting in her own pop centre for a few turns, doing nothing but prenticing and casting spells, she is NOT wandering about in the wilderness outside so should NOT be vulnerable to attack by spiders or other nasties!
  Richard.
