Standard (and non-Standard) variants

But I think that 1650 normal (or Grudge 12v12 is my particlar personal choice) is the best game still by a long way.

Ha, Ha,
looks like you’re speaking directly out of my soul !

And speaking of the Gunboat variant, Clint, you simply must stop the cutting remarks about it. It does not “lack the best aspects of team play.” It lacks the WORST aspects of team play. It embraces the BEST aspects of team play.

I try to give as unbiased view of the game both as a player and as a GM. I think a clarification might help here.

Player comment: As a player, I most enjoy my Grudge game which has a group of our friends turn up at my place and we discuss the game and our planned moves. IE I like that style of play. [In the same way my favourite polka dot shirt turned into a decorating shirt when it wore out and sadly is now deceased but I realise that others might fun such a shirt most unpleasant on the eye  ]

We’ve got stronger players and weaker players as any team has. It also has the highest level of skill to co-ordinate all this and to allow for all the team to work together (strengths and weaknesses allowed for). I enjoy a game where I can tax my skill as highly as possible (without boring factors like nitty rules and the like which, although a skill, I am not personally a fan of). GB is fun but not so skillful in my interpretation. A well laid plan can be messed up by a team-mate doing x instead of y - and I have found that in GB that happens more than in normal games.

Examples are game 36 where we hit the Rhudaur capital and on of us did a 250 and the other a 255 and the at the WK capital where he did a 255 and I did a 498. Or the Dwarves 525ing the PC that I had just that turn captured (not fault of his but not what I would call the best of skillful plays). It DOES have a different type of skill - one that is generally more selfish and individualistic and as a player I am happy to play to what the game’s “rules” are. (I can give lots of examples but it’s not particularly pertinent). So I enjoy the skillful aspect but when a team gells together the skill and fun (for me) is much higher. Organising 5 players to hit Morannon on turn 5 of game 3 was awesomely fun to get sorted out - hard work and compromises had to be made - but fun. See you in game 12 -1650.

GM comments: Each to their own, TomAAto, TomAAHto, it’s all fine and dandy as we support both game formats. Play the one you like most and feel free to comments on the strengths and weaknesses of either as you see fit.

The one weakness of GB that dropouts had a major impact has now been sorted I believe allowing team-mates to pick up nations - thanks the the 2950 GB suggestion there. It’s a strong format and one well worth playing.

Clint (player and GM)

2950:
Wotr [War of the Ring] - designed by Richard Devereux. Extra starting armies and PCs for both sides.

Is there a web site or post that provides information about this varriant? Ie what extra starting armies and PCs etc etc.

Thanks.
Shayne.

Just remember, I’m winning.

No such website at present but I can send on the details. Email me off list and I’ll send them on.

Greetings All !

GB is the right choice for frustrated team-players.

You’re doing it on your own, always hoping that your “team-mates” will do the correct moves.

You won’t have team-members only answering shortly before due-date, with no time to check their moves.

I’ll await the outcome of our first GB !

Have Fun !

GB is also for those have played with good teammates (years ago) and decimated most opponents to the point where there is very little challenge left in communicative games.

Ben,
you’re only playing 2950-games, right ?

We already met before, but it was too late in the game I’ve joined to give you a real challenge !

I hope smurf-hausen is still intact ?!

Ha, Ha, Ha !

Yeah,
I think there are some challenges, you only need to find the right teams !

Yeah, only 2950 for me. 1650, tried it one, I liked it, but 2950 seems to be more my pace.

And I’m still winning 229 Gunboat!!!
