Stealth and Character Bonuses

Hi All,

I'm wondering about how often a newly hired character gets a bonus.
It started, as most of my impulses to post do, as a complaint.

I'm playing the Ice King in a 1650 game, and I can NOT hire a
stealthy character. I've hire 9 new characters, and have only
received one bonus. I've played the Dog Lord, the Cloud Lord, and
the Dragon Lord, and I'm used to having about 1 character in every 4
or 5 coming with a bonus, generally stealth.

If any of you have run any numbers on how often a character gets a
bonus (and how often that bonus is stealth if you play a "stealthy
nation"), I'd be very interested in seeing them. I'm also willing to
collect data, if anyone wants to provide it.

As an aside, I have a friend (who's posted FAR too much on this board
if you're reading LC), who has a soft spot for the Woodmen. To the
best of my knowledge he has played them four times, and is playing
them now. Each of his games has lasted at least 8 turns, and is is
proud of the fact that he has NEVER hired a stealthy Woodmen
character. No kidding. I've seen him hire 3 characters in one turn,
and two of them have come with bonus challenge rank, but never
stealth.

Anyway, enough rambling. How often do new characters get bonuses?

BTW, I'm trying to hire an agent named Illian to see if Clint is
paying attention. If you are, Clint, HOW ABOUT SOME STEALTH?!?

I remember reading one of the Mouth of Sauron issues that talked
about stealth odds and the Ice King position(don't remember which one
though). It said getting stealth was more likely for nations like
the Noldo, Cloud Lord, Sinda and less likely for Ice King and
Woodmen. In the games I've played Ice King seems to have the
smallest chance of getting stealth out of all the nations with the
stealth ability.

Please don't. No need to "test" us on each aspect of our service to give us
a rating or awakeness. As for the Stealth my advice is "be more lucky".

Clint

In the stealthy nation department, I've run the noldo(twice), dog
lord, dragon lord, cloud lord. In three of the five runs with
"stealth" nations, I hired essentially no stealthy characters. In one
I got stealth fairly often but not on agents. In the last, I've hired
a battalion of stealthy agents (stealth 30+). Getting a bonus is a
simple matter of luck; getting stealth seems to depend *heavily* on
whether the naming character has stealth. If you name 20 new
characters in a game, your average is five bonuses - but there is only
a 60% chance to get between 3 and 7, and it is not that unlikely to
only get 1 or 2.

cheers,

Marc
