My problem with the movies was not that they did not exactly follow the
book. I loved Fellowship because, while there were a few edits and
consolidations due to time constraints (Tom Bombadil and Glorfindel among
others), the story was quite true to the spirit of JRRT's work. The changes
did not fundamentally change any of the characters or their motivations as
was rampant in the second two movies. PJ could have (and should have) saved
the licensing fees he paid and simply created an original work, it is what
he did anyway...

Boy, there are certainly a LOT of critics out there.

Has there EVER been a film based on a book which exactly followed the
book? Certainly they took liberties with the content. They always do. I
doubt very much that ANYONE thought this film would be any different.

Bottom line, the film had some differences from the book, but was still
excellent. If you disagree, you are certainly welcome to come up with
about $100,000,000 and give it a go yourself. Me? I'll just pay $4.50 to
see a movie that I may not agree with completely, but still had a great
time watching.
