This may draw flame from the British folks
but what the heck.
I am starting to feel a loss of richness in the
game due to the lack of Victory Certificates.
I don't mean the 2 turns they used to give
or the choice of position (or capital insurance
in FA), I can do without those just fine.
But I do feel they were great trophies to have
at the end of the game. I also liked getting
the information GSI sent out to everyone who
was in the game up to the 2nd to last turn
including the most number of kills and most
mithril and the highest rank achieved for each
class and the names of such characters, and
for each nations its victory points w/ and w/o
victory conditions. I also liked during the game
having the VC's as an extra thing to go for.
(I never betrayed anyone for any of them, I mean
going after a particular artifact or trading
an ally for a pc I needed.)
Without victory certificates, the victory conditions
we start are pointless in 1650 and 2950, and in FA
they are reduced in value to the game intelligence
they give us on artifact numbers and popcenter
names or locations.
In particular I miss certificates when I am
on the losing side! All I see now is a small
notice in a front sheet that the other side won.
I really liked getting a certificate and public
notice, that showed I finished 2nd or 3rd; it felt
much different from losses where I was simply
crushed. With that certificate I could at least
imagine (and anyone who saw the notice in GSI's
fanzine) that I had a negotiated surrender rather
than an unconditional one. In addition as a
soon-to-be defeated nation I might fight harder
just to deprive my favorite enemy of a certificate,
even if I had no chance to get one myself.
In one of my FA games out of sheer habit I retired
one of my characters early as it was a victory
condition of the ally I joined with. I won't
be doing that again -- what's the point?
Victory Certificates weren't perfect and were
not a reward to the "best" played position,
but they added an extra dimension to the game.
When they were actually worth money (free turns)
or game value (capital insurance or first choice
of nation) they might have been unfair, but
those benefits are gone. The Certificates
could be reinstated as trophies, and I would
like to see that happen, as they add to the
game's texture, they give it an extra dimension.

You get these - we send them - GWC's are on the cards - we are looking for
some nice artwork to use so that it can bemounted.

Well, presuming Clint was serious, I've been working on a design of a V.C. I
hope to have the pencils finished over the Easter Weekend, then give it to a
buddy for "tracing" -er- inking.

Aha! That would be great.
What about the game stats at the end -- could
you send those out?

Just regular ones. If the game ends, a nation
on the losing side could be in 2nd or 3rd place
and get a 2nd or 3rd place certificate.

Do you mean 3 different certs? 1650, 2950, and 4th?
Thanks, Jeff

No I was hoping to get a lot of them to collect. Good idea on
the different
