Went and saw this twice yesterday and have to give it some thought;
When Fellowship came out, I expected to be disappointed, but wasnt.
When TT came out I expected an epic movie, I suppose I was slightly
disappointed with alot of the changes. But then thinking more about,
its actually really very good. Go see it, but dont expect the works
of Tolkien on the screen like someone acting out Macbeth! This is an
adaptation!
Morannon, the Easterling and the Haradrim are spectacular. (although
I did expect the Ohh Wee Ohhh chant from the Wizard of Oz at one
point!) I didnt mind the cloak issue at that point, in fact I thought
that scene was well done because they drew you to look away from the
actual hobbit hiding place as well, so when they did unveil
themselves it was quite shocking! Warg riders were a little "Clash of
the Titans" looking, but that would be extreme nitpickering!
Elves at Helmsdeep, excellent, although that leader guy dropped like
a chump! (Also, dont quite picture Elves with 5 o'clock shadow, but
what are ya gonna do!)
Ent scenes were great, but seemed a little forced. Screw this war,
we're not gonna fight. Ok, no problem, take us south. Hey, what
happened here, now I'm pissed. You have to ask why all the other Ents
had decided to follow Treebeard to drop off the hobbits. It took him
all day to gather them for the moot, but only about 30 seconds to
call them to Isengard...hmmmm....! I suspect some DVD extras here!
Gollum is the MAN! I will now wear Gollum T shirts and put Gollum
bumper stickers on my car! Someone said he should be given an Oscar!
Definately.....guess we'll have to settle for best animated character!
I Guess the only scene that didnt make much sense was the Osgiliath
scene. Seems it was twenty minutes that could have been better spent
somewhere else, but it was neat to see the ruins and I suppose they
had to get the winged nazgul in there somewhere!
And finally, the best scene, in my humble opinion....the
opening...Gandalf kicking ass down the pit of Moria...
