I do have some other gripes, though. Why was Faramir turned into
Boromir light? Why was Elrond made such a whiner? Why was Theoden
made feckless and indecisive even after Gandalf cured him of
Saruman's spell? I'm not an arch-purist. I had no problem with the
rewrite of Arwen in the Fellowship. I just can't grasp why Jackson
moved so far away from Tolkien on these points when i don't see how
they are cinematically necessary or improvements to the story.
My son, however, loved the battle scenes. ...

My points exactly. I had no problem with most of the changes in the first movie, seeing them as advancing the story (though the cockroach goblins and falling stairs seemed more about "cool effects" than good story telling). I just don't get why there were so many changes to this movie.
Perhaps the Aragorn washed away was to give Arwin an "Active Role" of some kind in this movie. I really hope that the elves showing up at Helm's Deep wasn't an excuse to get Arwin into the company of Aragorn. I see NO NEED for the Osgiliath scene. Why not send the hobbits off like the book, then have them on the stair to Cirith Ungol as the host of Mordor marches off to Ogiliath? Leave the fall of Osgiliath and the battle of the Pelenor Fields for the third movie. If I recall, some of hte early artwork for the movie had the hobbits cowering in the mountains, looking down at a vast army marching our of Minas Morgul. What a great final scene of the second movie that would have made.
Shaun, good to see that I am not the only one reading emails and being not
