Could some kind soul please refresh my memory on naval combat?
1) If a navy wins a battle at sea, and takes damage, am I right in thinking all losses taken first from warships, before any transports are lost?
2) If such a navy had only 100 troops (it wasn't deliberate), am I right in thinking that it will survive if it looses only warships?

Yes and yes and also my understanding is that if you only have 100 ships
they will survive until last transport sinks.

RD: Rulebook, he say (p52): since warships are designed to protect transports, they will normally be destroyed before any damage occurs to the transports.
Therefore, the answer to both your questions appears to be: yes.
