US FTF and CC Charges

Never one to turn from beating a dead horse:

The US has good rail transport only between close
cities -- it's easy to take a train from Boston to New
York. But Minneapolis is far from other urban centers.

About credit cards, it is actually illegal to add a
surcharge, thanks to lobbying by credit companies.
Other old folk may remember that twenty years ago, you
couldn't use credit cards in supermarkets -- the slim
margin of profit was eaten up by the 4% card fee.

For a while, stores got around it by setting higher
prices and offering a "discount" for cash -- clever,
but that loophole was closed. Now smaller fees, except
for American Express, and more efficient processing
have made them widely accepted.

Harly's fees seem fair to me.
