I am curious about the Gunboat and Last Alliance variants to the game.....if you've information and care to share with a newer player.......

I believe, gunboat means that no inter-team communication is permitted. Each nation for themselves kind of thing. For people that want to run turns but not have to coordinate moves with allies.
Last Allience is set at the end of the second age when the ring was cut from Sauron's finger. Massive free pop center/economic advantage. DS just have to survive long enough for Sauron to learn to use the One Ring to full effect... Or something like that.
