Vedr. Making Light Troops More Useful -- AKA Heavy Means Metal!

I have allways concidered metalweapon, steel armor aso as weapon/armor IMPROVED wirh steel/bronze. "Wood"-weapon the same. Not improved at all. Just stadard weapon for the trooptype.

I think we just need to change the messages we are receiving in our turns. So that "Wood"weapon are called "standard" or "not improved" or something.

Regarding light troops. I think it would be cool if PCs randomly changed what kind of trooptypes it is possibble to recruit at any time, but so that it will allways be possibble to recruit cavallery(LC or HC) and some non-cavallery-types at any PC. Having 2-4 choices at any time.

The basic idea is that, in reality, since the bronze age, no heavy troops ever really were recruited that didn't have at least some metal as part of their armor -- and pretty much all weapons were at least partly metal, most effective weapons were mostly metal.

I also think it would be cool if armies could get a small bonus for having mixed trooptypes because on the battlefield difrent trooptypes can do difrent missions which is benefitial.Changes like this should maybe be done only in future scenarious not yet developed.

Instead of going the metal way -- as to me it would be to costly for nations to buy metals and then set up recruiting for this -- I say go the movement way -- lighter troops should be able to move farther then heavy troops -- for example -- an army of just HI with no food moving through plains move through those hexes at 4 -- thus only moving 3 hexes -- how about if an army of just light infantry with no food moved at 3 or even half of the Hi of 2 -- then would be able to move 4 hexes at 3 or 7 hexes at 2. Throw a high commander on this army and you got a nice pop center threat jumping around.

Just food for thought.

A light infantry army of Kenyan long distance sprinters...? personally I think
it isnt a good idea. I cant think of any historical examples of a
commander deliberatley forming a whole army of only lightly armed foot
troops and it doesnt server any gameplay benefit that isnt already fulfilled by
CAVALRY.

I think people would just like a bit more logic to the heavy/light distinction
and a meaningful reason to recruit the light troops, movement isnt a good
solution but a suggestion like Ernie's tying it to PopC/Metal Production is a
good idea. Or even as Sverre suggested just simply changing the wording on our
resultsheet. I always find it immersion breaking when I read about my mighty
army of HI with wooden swords and get a mental image of some poor bastards
fighting with bamboo sticks.

One of the "more movement" ideas that came along for Light troops was a free
recon - they couldn't move twice as far but they wandered a bit more in the 2
weeks to provide this extra intel while the Heavies slugged it down the trail
until hitting camp.

But as Ed noted (did anyone check out Laurences 2nd Edition site since..?),
there's no "tweeking" but only an overhaul/replacement. If Ernie can get 25 or
so players to voluntarily avoid the 400 and 408 orders without metals, all the
power to him, sorry, my slate of games is over-full again...sigh...
