How about limiting Veteran players to powerful nations only? That
would resolve the issue of "allowing" newbies to play them. How
about it? Any volunteers?
I would like to learn how to play these nations, by... hhhmmm
watching another player play them. Oh, I see - real practical
experience.
If I am not mistaken, a part of being a toddler is learning to take a
few bumps on the way to walking. Yeah it may take a few years before
one learns to walk without falling. Sure you encounter a few bumps
and scrapes along the way. But usually you have a parent, relative
or loved one to guide you along. But each of those adults know that
a toddler has to learn how to walk on their own.
I don't think any of us would be where we are if we were sheltered
from the "real world." (well, maybe not Clint). Let us kids learn.
As if!
As far as I know, when a new game begins accepting nations,
their allotment is an adhoc between first come first serve
and how many want this or that. Then nobody wants to play
these nations but 28 people want into the game, so Clint
asks those signed up who wants to play these nations instead,
then 7 people reply, 5 drop the game there and then, but
Clint now has to reorder the first-comes/serves removing
the 2 who volunteered for the nation in question, and
then the 5 who left, then count..21..22..23..oh darn...and
realize the game is now under players not over, so he'd better
email all those he emailed advising they'd be in the next game
and ask who wanted to be in this one again and then they might
(sometime, that month) get back to him or drop or change their
nation preferences meanwhile a group of 5 from a game that just
ended want's to play again but only together on the same team
while signups are now at 32, from 22 just after 28 and now
7 people want the Woodmen, oh crap, shuffle those cards and
deal...
Brad who always gets Rhudaur or something less palatable
whether he asks for it or not...

I only give out nations if you list them on your preference. Most games I create now-adays are Waiting List games. You send me a list of the nations you would like to play and then I fit that into the game when I get to 25. It speeds up game set-ups and means those hard to fill nations such as NM and Eo (IK sometimes, and RHun East a LOT!) get someone playing it who wants to play it.

Personally, I try to take a variety of nations so everyone gets a chance to play the "cool" ones. Plus, it's fun to be the Woodmen sometimes.

Exactly. It's the same way you learn anything: you watch someone else do it, then you try yourself.

Toddlers don't drive, though! They try to walk under careful supervision of their parents, and not until they crawl. You don't throw a newborn out into the world and tell him to get a job.

You are more than free (in fact, encouraged) to learn. That does not mean you have to play North Gondor in game one. Everyone is better off if you get some training wheels first. That's how you learn anything: start slow, and work your way up.
No offense intended. I realize that the games are mostly waiting
lists.
I may have missed the original premise of these posts... not so much
limiting positions available to newbies, but listing the best
positions for newbies.
I agree, letting newbies know which positions are difficult to play
is a good idea. But limiting them from choosing those positions is
a poor idea.
Enough said. Me kid you doin' a good job by the way!
Still learnin...
Now can you add an agent bonus to my newly named commander?

So how come Brad is always Rhudaur then? I'm not complaining, just asking. We LIKE to know that Brad is Rhudaur in every game, it's more satisfying when Art Card and WiK form an alliance to smack him
