Whither Automagic?

2) Europe STILL charges for internet use based on TIME on
line? That's quite funny, really!

No, not funny at all. There is absolutely no impetus for
the European telecoms people to change their ways. Despite the
EU directives to try to open up the market to competition,
national protectionism and practices still rule the day.
Most companies that tried the all-you-can-eat approach have
given up: there just wasn't enough capacity to mee the
inevitable demand and customer complaints went through the roof.

I'm one of the lucky ones: I have ADSL through France Telecom.
A collegue just two kilometres away will have to wait two years
for his connection and is therefore stuck with time-based billing.

Try telling him it's "funny".
