ICK !!!!!!
I shudder to think of how much a game cost from start to
end. Paying it off
in installments is a much better option than one (generally upfront)
payment.
Well, I wasn't trying to suggest how payment be collected;
I know, but the implications of paying for a flat fee should be included if
we are thinking of going to a flat free system.
Say an average game lasts 30 turns, thats a fair bit of money (not as much
as the goverment steals from me, but more than I spend on the women in my
life). I don't want to pay upfront for this amount, so I need to pay it off
in installments (I feel better if I pay smaller amounts more often). If the
game ends on turn 20, then Clint is going to have a hard time making me pay
for the extra 10 turns that won't be run. And if the game goes past turn 30,
then Clint gets nothing for all the effort. Both cases are bad.
I think we should only pay for the turns that occur.
The magic question is 'how to reduce the number of turns that occur' - while
I'm fine with paying for 52 turns if the game is great, I'm against paying
for 52 turns if IMO the game becomes boring. Stopping the game at turn 52 is
a great move and 'rewarding' people for surrendering earlier (as against
losing later on) is another option that needs to be considered. The other
side needs to accept the surrender otherwise a side would never lose - they
just surrender before they lose their last pop centre.
again, that's
Clint's deal. I'd just like to remove an OOC factor in the tourney.
OOC ? I've got olympic stuff on the brain, and seeing IOC all the
time(International Olympic Committee) is making my brain not work out what
OOC stands for.
Apparently an "Everquest" reference, but originally (I'll wager) an Ian Banks
reference from his latest "Culture" set effort, entitled "Excesssion." Banks is
awesome, and Excession is quite a read, but go back and read the 3 original
Culture novels first if you haven't ...
Hth.

Actually, I meant it as "Out of Character," or in this case Out of Game.
In other words, if we were playing MEPBM on a tabletop, we wouldn't be
worrying about out 4GBP/turn, and would possibly play differently.
Is any of the short story stuff Culture-set? If so, which collection(s)?? I'd
read it in a heartbeat ... (tho' not, of course, at the expense of quality
MEPBM-time:).

Yep. The State of the Art short story book and good. (Read Canal Dreams
one of his [non-SF] books which I was told was the worst of them and so far
haven't got around to reading the other fiction he has done). He
occasionally writes stuff which gets printed in SF Mags as well (can't
recall off the top of my head what's it called).
