Zipping files using Batch files in Dos

Anyone know how to do this with file lengths bigger than 8 characters. (Or
using Winzip or anything else for that matter). Winzip we can do by hand
but we don't want to do that for several hundred files every day.

Most Windows batch files can deal fine with long file names - what zip
tool and what version of Windows/DOS are you using?

I was able to automatically zip a sample XML file using the following
command line:

winzip32 -min -a g223n19t014.zip g223n19t014.xml

You should be able to add multiple files at once either by listing
more than one file at the end or by using a wildcard:

winzip32 -min -a g223n19t014.zip g223n19t014.xml g223n19t014.pdf
or
winzip32 -min -a g223n19t014.zip g223n19t014.*

This kind of concerns me. I don't want to have to unzip files or do
anything but download files. I want to get my turn and look at it in
as simple a way as possible and using as few bytes of information as
possible. If a color map is going to cause me to have to unzip files
or do anything but read the file with Acrobat I would just as soon
have the option to receive a black and white map only. I think that
is Peter and Brad Brunet's position also. Bigger file sizes are not
desireable. Follow the KISS principle and keep things as simple for
the player as you can.

American Brad just to keep it straight;-)

Hi,
Bit worried about recieving zipped turns as past experience has shown
that zipped xml files occasionally become corrupted.

Size really isn't an issue as the extra couple of seconds it takes to
download a turn with the colour map really isn't that noticeable. I've
just tried sending some files to myself and cannot detect the
difference in download time between the ziped up pdf/xml package and
the unzipped files. Obviously there is a size difference, but it's
really not that much. However I can see the advantage for Clint & Co
and this small difference will have greater impact when multiplied by
the number of turns they send out every day.

Not my position. Who wouldn't prefer colour?

I feel the Value of the colour map isn't worth the extra 150% or so file
size.
I feel the Value of reduced file size IS worth the extra double-click
required to unzip files.

Ideally then, we'd have full colour pdf's with ALL the fonts and special
characters present with higher resolution pictures and XML's that worked no
matter how badly AL (or however you spell it with all those extra
letters... mangled it ZIPped together such that the single turn attachment
was in the neighbourhood of 100k. A single zipped file doesn't necessarily
take more "clicks" to extract and save than 2 seperate attachments and
reduces the file size.

Clear?

I haven't seen a color map .pdf yet. Sounds cool, but then I'm not
really limited by file sizes and I know not everyone's in the same
position.

I'd kinda assumed the point of zipping the files was to get AOL to
stop mangling the XML files.

The compression is pretty nice, with the XML file I tried my command
line on dropping from 50k to under 4k. I'm not sure how much it'll
save on the .pdf files.

But leaving the XML files unchanged is even better.

I've yet to see a .zip file mangled by a mailer that can handle .pdfs,
but I suppose anything's possible.

Thanks - Peter - you get player of the week award! (Haven't

but heck it looks techie!) If ever you decide to take a 75% drop in

wages

and want a job in PBM you know where we are...

Well, get me a visa and I'll think it over. Heh.

Seriously, though, the XML stuff is all right in line with my current
job, and a lot more fun when I can tinker with it on my own schedule.
The encoding schemes are kinda neat, if you're geeky enough to find
that kind of thing interesting.

Anyway, you might want to hold off on the praise until the WinZip
stuff works, but it looks about right to me and tested out ok on my
computer. If it doesn't work, there is a separate command line plugin
for WinZip, but it's not clear to me what the difference is between
that and the winzip32 executable. I can try to lend a hand debugging
if need be, though I don't really have any special expertise with WinZip.

If you don't have a full registered version of WinZip it'll still pop
up the evaluation terms window, so you can't really batch that. I
doubt there's a good way around that with WinZip. If you don't have a
commercial version of WinZip I personally don't think there's any
reason to get one - there are a bunch of legitimately free zip
programs out there. For example, Freebyte Zip at
http://www.freebyte.com/fbzip/ is free for commercial use and includes
a command-line interface you can use to write batch files - or at
least so they claim, I haven't personally tested it.

Okay we'll check - we've got a registered version of PKzip but not Winzip.

Clint

Winzip.

pkzip ought to do it just fine too.

From their web site, it looks like they have an additional command
line module. You should be able to find out if you have it and have
it installed or not by running "pkzipc -version" at a DOS prompt.

Assuming you have pkzipc available, it looks like the commands are
almost the same as winzip:

To add/zip just one file:
pkzipc -add g223n14t015.zip g223n14t015.xml

To add/zip multiple files:
pkzipc -add g223n14t015.zip g223n14t015.xml g223n14t015.pdf
or
pkzipc -add g223n14t015.zip g223n14t015.*

Having the .zip in the filename there is optional - you could also write:
pkzipc -add g223n14t015 g223n14t015.*
and it'll automatically name it .zip.

Or so their manual leads me to believe. They have docs online at
http://www.pkzip.com/support/updates/pkzip_windows.html .

I think the problem is related to the palantir mapper; the xmls it
uses are corrupted by some email programs. If they are zipped, this
should not be an issue. This may require a different delivery system;
I'd rather spend the extra few seconds unzipping stuff than the
tedious editing process that is currently required for, say, turns
sent to aol addresses...

cheers,

Marc
