Game 04 Quiet Freeps

Great Superbowl, especially the end.

Don’t go mad trying to do all your nations… it’s the quickest way to get frustrated and eventually bored with the game…

If the rest of your team really has dropped, then you’re better off letting the game go and joining a couple of new games with a mixture of new and experienced players. (and I’m not saying that to get you to drop… but you probably won’t believe me, so ask Clint or others)

What happened in the Superbowl… I fell asleep at the half time show and woke up after it was all over!!!

Scorp, okay so you issued the 185’s this turn, may I ask when you moved an army into 3627?

Once the game is over, I will forward you my turns so you can see exactly when I reversed my plans.

Sc0rp10

If I got paid money for all the times someone did not go through on a deal I would play for free.

Believe it when the icon turns and not before.

Renaging on a deal is all in the game, some do some dont, but its only a game unless you take it outside the game.

Whatever happened put it down to experience and jump into the next one and enjoy

Vandal

Due to the deceptive behavior of the Easterlings the Dwarves and Cardolan nations are OUT of the game.

My teammates should have headed my previous warnings and attacked you while you were playing your little game.

Ops well someone decided to ignore me on that and well I wont ask why he did not go good now I think I can see

Does the Noldo expect any agreement to hold on this basis.

If so ask the Rhudaur in game 5 why he is good and not dark right now

Vandal

Claus,

I am not dropping until I realize I have no means to achieve victory and I
am far from that yet. I will continue to do all 10 nations and I know it
won’t wear me out or become boring. I know the multiple dragon armies (nice
touch) and the bogus assassination of 2 commanders or even blowing the
bridge at 2924/3024 didn’t affect me much at all…after all there are
still old men, women and children to recruit and send into Mordor. Don’t be
surprised if your turnsheets show “1000 Maidens with frying pans and hot
grease” as an army though!

I’ve made a few mistakes here and there for Northern and Southern Gondor,
but overall I think I’ve done okay for my first game. I’m in another (game
49) as one of the Dark Side in an age 1000 Grudge Match and its a lot slower
than this one.

Scorpion,

You can send your pdf’s if you’d like, but it will be rather a moot point as
my hostility isn’t about you choosing to go Dark, it was about saying one
thing to the Noldo, then changing your mind because of demonseed’s comments
(that could have been resolved internally).

You missed seeing a little extra from Janet Jackson and a game-winning field
goal with 4 seconds left to break a tie game!

Why because someone is ticked after someone broke there word. He has every right to be ticked

Note Neutrals are allowed to change to whichever allegiance they feel most suits them. That’s why my general advice is NEVER trust a Neutral until he has changed his icon. Only then can he be trusted as an allied nation (and even then he might not be co-operative).

That’s part of the advantage of being a Neutral - the ability to double deal. It’s not something that I personally like about the game, but it’s within the rules so beware.

I don’t know what’s gone on behind the scenes and clearly players are heated so my advice is keep calm and try to put things into perspective. Until a nation actively changes icon then you can still negotiate after all.

Get in touch if you want me to chat directly to you. Note I need a name if you want me to deal with any query that you might want - a pseudonym is not enough. (How else do I know who I am dealing with?!)

Thanks
Clint (GM)

Well I hate to surrender, I’d rather fight til there is nothing left, but I can’t justify carrying the fiscal responsibility of 10 nations, although I wish I could.

Aaron

Hi,

first of an excuse to Aluiakanov, I didn’t realise when I wrote last time, that it was actually the Gondors carrying on the game, when they are actually the ones with the hardest losses. That’s the spirit! Never give up!

For the rest of you I really would have preffered it if you had carried on, taking on whatever nation that you may feel have crossed you, I have heard from some nations on my side that wanted to take on Demonseed.

As for the end of the game, what happens, it’s said that some nations are out for good, what did you do? Willingly terminated them with bankruptcy? Ask Clint to find replacements? Something else? I’m a bit confused here, so I think I, along with the rest of my team will continue issuing orders for game 4 onwards.

Clint if you could enlighten me (and probably others?) on what is going on right now I would be happy,

Claus

Once more an excuse to alukianow for misspelling his name it wasn’t on purpose I was just in a hurry! If you would hate to surrender, don’t, try and convince your teamies to stay on anyway, and see if you can’t beat the pulp out of us anyway,

“the bogus assassination of 2 commanders”

Now english isn’t my first language, but doesn’t bogus mean something like not true? This last turn saw the very true death of Elatar and Telumethar, and I think Tarondor was just lucky!?

alukianow also wrote:

Well so do I, also a lot of the players on my team has done a great effort in their first game, so it’s quite sad for you all that it’s going to end this way instead of how it’s supposed to end (with one side beaten to pulp),

Claus

Hi Claus,

I am not the least bit offended that my name was mis-spelled, it happens. It’s actually a Ukrainian name and I’m going to take a wild guess and assume you don’t have Slavic heritage?

There is no convincing my teammates to continue, it is a horrible shame to have our game end this way. I thought our two teams were really having fun and learning and to have it end because of one unethical lying Neutral seems a travesty; but a fact none the less.

I have thought about some alternative ways to try to “roll back the clock” like suggesting we go back one set of orders and have the Easterling player replaced with a more ethically sound person, but the problem is that he already has acted upon the knowledge we shared after he committed in writing to join us. That crucial knowledge has already been given to your team and thus the damage is well past the point of repair.

I am sad both our teams were cheated out of this game.

I am planning to get into another 1650 game shortly and have submitted the 5 nations I’d like to try; I hope I meet with some of your team in such a game or in the future. I also hope to join a Gunboat game sometime in the future after my 1000 age game (49) ends. I am playing a customized nation called O_Canada (it’s where I am from).

As for “bogus assassination”, what I meant was:

Imagine a camp with a small army, but ready to fight off any raiding Free People armies that come near…and a few hills away, my Northern and Southern Gondor armies are camping around a fire, telling battle stories in preparation for a fight.

Off in the distance two figures slowly approach and are detained by the soldiers guarding our emcampment and brought in front of my 3 Warlords (Elatar, Celdrahil & Telmuthar). A brief questioning begins and the 2 people being detained simply don’t appear to be who they say they are…then one of the detainees has his disguise foiled and then the other’s disguise is removed…there stand Ji Indur and Erennis!!!

Needless to say, Celdrahil and Elatar immediately step forward and face these deadly assassins whose reputation proceeds them… A challenge is issued by Elatar and Celdrahil and all 3000 soldiers watch what could be an incredible fight to the death. A puff of smoke erupts and Ji Indur and Erennis run away as fast as they can, scared like children!

Elatar and Celdrahil laugh and tell the soldiers step up the guard, and don’t bother chasing those two chickens!

Now…1 of 2 things would likely happen if the balance of Agents and Armies were equal:

#1 Ji Indur and Erennis because they declined personal challenge when they were known to be coming for my warlords, would simply go to the nearest Inn and be thankful they didn’t lose their life and think about different costume disguises for next time.

#2 They attempt to go back to the encampment and of course every one of the 3000 soldiers is looking for them…and they would either be captured or killed.

However this is not the case and somehow Ji Indur and Erennis despite chickening out of a fight were somehow able to assassinate my commanders. Touche!

I think that if there is one suggestion to make the games more realistic, that a player shouldn’t be able to issue both 215 and 670 in the same turn. I think it’s only fair that if you know an assassin is coming for you and your personally challenge him, and he/she declines, they shouldn’t be able to then assassinate the character later.

What do you think?

Talk to you again shortly Claus!

alukianow,

Even the most experienced players make mistakes, even Clint I would venture out on the plank to say. They may be mistakes in your eyes a few turns down the line, but not always mistakes. When they happen to me, I look at the situation and say “wow, I wont do that again.” I take it as a learning experience.

Just as this non-noble neutral action in your eyes. Someone has said they were going to do something, you plan on that thought and something happens and it goes the other way. Such is life in many many things and situations. I really think Clint put it best, never trust a neutral until the icons change. Look at Sarumon in Middle Earth. Gand went to see him and was betrayed. It happens a lot and I am sure many people reading this will say it has happened to them. A neutral says one thing and does another. From what I gather, being the first time playing a neutral, it is to stave off any offensive against such a neutral so they can be prepared and not get attacked till they are on the offensive. I am not going to say what Scorp did was right or wrong because I do not know the situation but from what I read on the forum earlier from Demonseed, I probably would of done the same thing. I am not pointing any fingers or laying any blame but I hope in future games names are not called at neutrals or big demands made of them early on. A learning experience in diplomacy.

As for being the first game, I have looked at the happenings of the game and I still feel the Free have the upper hand but that is just an amateur players opinion. I for one am glad to have played in this game if you are ready to throw down swords but I hope some of the happenings of this game are kept in mind for further games.

As for the assasination(s) you were talking about, I am in agreement with you. Albeit challenges aren’t always made face to face, but if in front of your army you challenge someone and they refuse, they should have a harder chance of completing the mission. Now game mechanics are using a code that cannot, or is difficult, to change. An assasin is skilled at deception and “sneakability” (if such a word exists) which doesnt make it the hardest thing to sneak past some sentrys and some gaurds at the front of a tent. That is what makes this game intersting. As for the comment of “not being allowed to 215 then 670” then this game would lose lots of it planning and coordination that goes into it. Also keep in mind, challenges from an army commander can only go to another army commander or someone in the army(if im wrong, someone please correct me). Which is only fair I believe. You do not want one lone person walking up to an army and challenging and killing the commander and disbanding an army. Now, there is no rule for someone in and army challenging anyone in the hex which makes sense because the army wouldnt be disbanded if no backup commander. I hope that makes sense, it is 130 in the morning and hope I am being sensable.

I look forward to seeing you in another game. This is my third game after about a 14 year hiatus. I really love this game and there very VERY little I would change about it, besides me getting better and actually putting my foot down to my teammates when I believe something should happen. Which has cost a few lives and even an entire game because I didn’t voice my opinion strong enough.

I hope you continue but I know it is hard, because I have been there before. Noone will look at your badly for surrenduring due to the lack of team help but if surrenduring because a neutral didnt do what he said he was going to do, then everyone is in for lots of short games.

See you soon…

Without getting too personal, you really do not know what you are talking about. Whatever the Noldo told you I had agreed must be different to the emails I sent him. Read them again and make sure of the FACTS before writing any more rubbish.

What information did you share with me. As far as I remember, and I’ve read through all the emails I received from the free, I was told nothing that could possibly have helped the DS in mordor. None of you gave me any names, none of you gave me any army movements, none of you gave me plans of attack other than we’re going through the front door… wow, hardly game breaking news… My last email to Noldo said I’m leaning towards FP and would like 2 Mage artifacts to help my cause. What have you seen that says I was definitely joining you?

Rather than slander me with innuendo, why don’t you just publish the email texts and be done with it.

The only ones that are being cheated are the DS… so long under the hammer and then 1 good turn to stabilise positions and you all (except you) drop out.

If this is how your team mates are going to play in future games, I pity the rest of the players that will be stuck with them as team mates in future games.

Since you have at least tried to continue, I’ll say good luck in future games. If you really feel agrieved once you read through all the email communication I had with Noldo, then I’m sorry, and hope you have more luck liaising with neutrals in future.

For what it’s worth, I NEVER trust a neutral until the army icons change to my alliegance. I may well exchange information, but nothing that the other side wouldn’t see plainly in their turns. Then there can be no misunderstanding if things go wrong.

There is another aspect tp this that, I think, the FP are overlooking. This is a fantasy simulation. That means you can do things you never could/would in Real Life. Not only can you cast magic spells you can lie, cheat and steal. Something that most of us would never do in our proper persons. Try to be more flexible guys. You don’t have to wesr horse blinkers in this game. If you choose to do so, understand that not everyone else will.

Hi Scott,

Hope you had a good christmas break and are now raring to go in ME…

I’ve started moving my troops around, and by the end of this turn they will be in position from where they can start charging into the back of mordor.

I had an email from Rhu… you are right, he has gone DS… seems to think the DS are starting to pull their act together. They don’t seem to have any experience on their team… well, apart from Rhu now. He seems to think they are all over Rhovanion… is this right??? if it is, are all my pop centres in danger once I declare??

I don’t know if you’ve been following the bulletin board G4 thread… is Demonseed on your team? You might want to give him some diplomacy tips for future games… he could, if I didn’t know he was a newbie, tip neutrals against his team.

Anyway, catch you soon

Regards

So umm… what does this mean?
Thanks for proving my point

“never trust a neutral until they switch icons” I have heard this in a few different posts, so let me explain why I am ticked.

This was billed to me as a newbie game, so I went out and recruited nine players who NEVER played before. I was told the neutrals all knew this and would act as guides and mentors.

Mentors and trecherous snakes are two very differnt things in my book.

The Game is over, eight of the players I brought on board will probably never play again. I am moving on I spent enough energy on this disaster of a game.

Good Bye and Good Luck
