Problem with the encounters as it might get too much to learn - note half
the players who join up find the game not for them for one reason or
another.

It would be good if we can get some flavour in here though.

Yes a bit more. If people are to get a "flavor" for the game, the 615 and

210/215 orders should, indeed I think must, be included if people are to get
a real "feel" for the game.

I like the Hobbit based "Battle of Five Armies" Scenario. A couple of

more things might help.

First, add an encounter with Smaug at 3107.
Secondly, add artifacts on the characters, such as Bilbo Baggins, who

should be a free character, has Sting #149. Gandalf, also a pc in this
scenario, should have Glamdring and his ring. As Bilbo was hired as the
"group thief" there should be the 690 order included. Finally, there needs
to be one of the "Eagles" encounters. It should be the one which gives a
combat bonus in addition to a recon.

What I'm suggesting is a bit of each of the major elements of the game. A

major encounter, a few artifacts, one agent, army combat, etc.

The point I see is to include each element that someone who's read the

Hobbit would expect and not much further.

Each of these points may be "chrome" but that's what would hook a new

player. The chance to restage the end of the Hobbit, with the outcome
uncertain.

I agree on limiting the troop types to what was there.

I.E.- Dw with HI, SI with HI and the DS with orc warg riders, probably

HC.

Just my 2 cents. Fire away.

NEW players. No doubt we could get the odd player playing who has played
before - just to try it out if you want.

This might be of interest, when MEPBM first came out they ran a demo
out at Gencon at the time. You may be interested in questioning GSI
about it. From what I recall the setup was of course 1650 so those
that played could learn the military aspect of the game. And the
setting was the NW quadrant of the map with a few changes. It was
Cardolan and Arthedain along with either the dwarves or the Noldo,
can't remember vs Rhudar (evil starting), the Witch King, and the
Dunns (already evil starting). Its fair cause if the gods know that
the Cardolan are coming then they can prepare for it. It was
interesting from what I understand they ran the turns every half of
an hour.

Just a thought, they did however use all the rules but then again in
that limited enviroment you didn't need all the rules or had to use
all the rules.

This reminds me. Harley talked a while back about maybe attention one

GenCon. Was anything decided or was the plans dropped?

greetings.

Any chance someone knows the answer to this riddle ...

In a forest lived he
as hearty as the proverbial tree.
During the struggle he helped as he could
but, in the end, he did as he would.

The essence of power seems to await just a one or two
word answer to the riddle... What word(s) or name
will Utima say ? (If no response is given, she will be
assumed to have fled the scene.)

I was tossing up tom bombadil (he didn't have a care
in the world when he lived in the forest), or ragadast
the brown (he also lived in the forest, and he helped
a little bit).

I choose ragadast the brown, and got rejected. I was
thinking of tom, but he has other riddles for himself.
And I don't think he did any help in the WoTR (his
main fame was letting frodo and his mates crash at his
place). At least ragadast remembered that there was a
war on, and use the animals to pass on messages/spy.

thanks

I can't help with what it -is-, but it -isn't- Treebeard either.

I'd guess Treebeard. He lived in Fangorn, the forest. He also was more
or less a tree. He helped during the War of the Ring (Siege of
Isengard). But he also released Saruman on his own, because he felt he
wasn't much of a threat anymore, which annoyed Gandalf a bit when he
came back after defeating Sauron to have a chat with him.

Can there be multiple answers to a riddle? Might it not like

RD: Hey, this is a really good point. There is a riddle 'Hobbit murderer'
to which GSI's answer is Gollum. Strictly speaking that is WRONG because
when he committed the murder, his name was Smeagol. He only became Gollum
years if not decades later under the baleful influence of the stolen Ring.
So there!

Hi,
I can't help with what it -is-, but it -isn't- Treebeard either.

Can there be multiple answers to a riddle? Might it not like
Treebeard, but would work with Fangorn, his elvish name?

Well, having a quick hunt around on the web, the following list of
wrong answers can be found:

NOT: Fangorn, Quickbeam, Radagast, Legolas, Thranduil, Tom Bombadil,
Celeborn, Old Man Willow, Ghan-buri-Ghan, Beorn

Is there maybe some first/second age angle on this (Doriath maybe) ?

wrong answers can be found:

where did you get them ? i looked at bobbin's, facade,
and stormy and couldn't find the riddle.

oops, Tom was going to be my second guess. The ents
are nice guesses, but you would have to be desperate
to think that old man willow would be the answer.

Is there maybe some first/second age angle on this
(Doriath maybe) ?

"In a forest lived he
as hearty as the proverbial tree.
During the struggle he helped as he could
but, in the end, he did as he would".

doriath is a place, so we cross that off.

The answer is a creature. He (so no females), lived in
a forest, he gave some help to one side (I assume its
the free, but it doesn't have to be). Later on he
followed his nature and went his own way, so his aid
stopped.

the 'struggle' could be anything. I would think third
age since this age saw the human take over middle
earth. For the elves it was a real struggle to hold on
to what they had. But it could be an earlier age.

Eol maybe ? He lived in a forest. 'Technically' he was
one of the good guys, and he did some good deeds. And
he certainly didn't continue to help the free

Another question - what's the amerian definition of
'hearty' ?

thanks for the help

I just went to the google search engine (www.google.com) and copied in
the first couple of lines of the riddle.

Google, the best search engine out there

I just went to the google search engine (www.google.com) and copied in
the first couple of lines of the riddle. It found a bunch of sites with
riddle data on them.

Google's definately one of the best search engines out there

Thingol, maybe. I don't think first of "hearty" when I think of
Thingol, but with the list above excluded he seems like a possibility.

Oystein,
Excellent point about the seeming lack of precision when it comes to
multiply named individuals, places, etc. I thought the exact same as
you when it came to Smeagol in lieu of Gollum, especially since Smeagol
was an acknowledged Hobbit, while Gollum is sort of regarded as
something of a creature. This very turn in my First Age game I'll be
providing an "alias" as a result of a failed riddle result for a name I
was pretty sure about in the first place! I could be wrong, but I'll
see. . .

RD: Hey, this is a really good point. There is a riddle 'Hobbit murderer'
to which GSI's answer is Gollum. Strictly speaking that is WRONG because
when he committed the murder, his name was Smeagol. He only became Gollum
years if not decades later under the baleful influence of the stolen Ring.
So there!

Richard.
